Graphite Drawing of the Left, Anterior Femur
2023
University of Dundee, Medical Art - Semester 1
Medium: Graphite
Development
Research & Practice
The project began with direct observation and reference gathering from anatomical models and high-resolution images to ensure accuracy in the representation of the femur. A rough pencil sketch was developed to establish proportions, anatomical landmarks, and overall composition.

Process
A range of graphite grades—from H to B—was used to build depth, form, and tonal variation, carefully rendering the cortical bone texture and subtle curvature of the shaft. Particular attention was given to the trochanters, condyles, and articulating surfaces to highlight structural complexity and function. Blending tools, such as tortillons or tissue, were used sparingly to maintain a clean, precise finish while enhancing the illusion of volume.

Final Illustration

The final image was scanned at high resolution, digitally prepared for academic presentation in Adobe Photoshop. The result is a scientifically accurate and visually refined graphite study of the femur, created in line with the University of Dundee’s standards for anatomical illustration.
